Let’s flash back to Matthew West’s 2012 Into the Light album.
CCM fans will have no problem recognizing this song. ‘Do Something,’ certainly got it’s share of air play on the the airwaves as it is upbeat and carries a meaningful and provocative message. It was so impactful that it reached as high as 4th on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart in 2014. However, in case you were not tuned into the CCM four years ago, here’s the song.
‘Do Something,’ is a song that ask the tough question. Why isn’t God doing anything to change all of the hardship in the world? Matthew West gets at it by reminding us that God made you and I, and that we are often capable of making meaningful impact in the world around us. Surely, if a person is hungry, we have the means to provide them food. Surely, if a person needs hope, we have access to the kingdom of eternal joy. With the tools at our disposal, why isn’t more being done?
When this song first hit the airwaves I liked the message and it’s bold reminder that we can and should take action to impact the world. However, in time, I came to have hard feelings for the tune because it shines a light on a real problem. Too often, the church and it’s people sit by and do nothing to impact the world for the Kingdom. We have forgotten that big picture change always starts with small changes at the beginning. We don’t even need to look further than the story of Christ and how a baby becomes the key to life beyond imagination. If this is true, why are there so many Christians who will not get the process started and begin getting actively at work in the world?
Sadly, I can’t answer that question. I do not know why someone would say they love and will live for Christ and not care for those around them. No one does. This is a painful reality of the Christian faith that results in some tough experiences when the active faithful begin to evangelize.
With that being said, though, Matthew West’s song is not incorrect in what it’s getting at. Why not be the one making a difference? Aren’t you able to speak about your faith anytime you choose? Aren’t you able to feed a hungry woman asking for help outside your local McDonalds? Couldn’t you make a serious effort to ensure a lonely person has someone to talk to from time to time?
Yes, it is a true statement that this world need more Jesus. However, that will not physically happen until the Father wills. So….who does that leave?
You and Me!
Don’t be afraid to do something with the knowledge of Christ that you have. One tomato seed can sprout a fruitful vine. One effort to love someone in the name of Jesus can change their life. Just remember to do it from time to time. Thanks for coming back to read the latest from Sweet Sweet Sounds.
