Hi Pal.
Welcome to the monthly wrap for May! The Monthly Wrap is a monthly newsletter where I give a rundown of my favourite musical highlights of the past month.
Under The Lights
I feel like I’ve come here every month this year to talk about how that month is the “one” that has really kicked off 2023. Ignore everything I have said so far because May is that month!
Isla Vista Worship and Ethan Davis finally dropped their indie worship album titled Charmed and it’s quite beautiful. Skye Peterson also dropped Where The Winter Was, an album I’ve been anticipating from the singer-songwriter for quite a bit. It’s folky and soothing as I’ve come to expect from her. Jon Guerra proved to me once again that he is a master of song-crafting and has truly embodied experimental chamber pop sounds, mixed nicely with contemporary worship on his new album, Ordinary Ways.
I love a good Psalms-inspired project and we got two this month. Psalms: The Poetry of Prayer by Caroline Cobb continues the singer-songwriter’s discography of concept albums in sterling fashion while Psalms, Vol. 4 is a wonderful EP addition to Will Gray’s Psalm project. Hymns & Beats follows a similar theme as Civilized Creature puts an electronic spin on popular hymns.
Switching gears a bit, Victory Boyd (stylized as Victory) dropped Glory Hour, one of the best neo-soul projects I’ve heard in quite some time. Sondae dropped By The Water, an alternative R&B album that has slowly become my favourite album release of this month. It has electronic, experimental and acoustic elements and I can’t get enough of the quality of the project. Asaph’s Arrows also blew me away this May with one of the most eclectic lofi/lofi hip-hop releases of the year in Luna, Vol. 1: Reflection.
Just when I thought I was full for the month, I got two different surprises to cap things off; a Britpop/indie rock project by Haydon Spenceley titled Ruthless Trust and a folk rock project by Dylan Case White titled Remind Me Your Name.
Note: There were other releases in the month, but as per usual here, we try to pick our favourite ten. Yes, I know I gave you 11 (I couldn’t help myself).
Video Interlude
As you might be able to tell, there’s one video interlude today. That’s because it’s technically a movie and I thought it’d be nice for you to immerse yourself. If you’re up for it…
