Before it took you away
I tried to think of something I could say

Before it took you away
I tried to think of something I could say
I watched the shadows in the hall
How they danced with the light and the white on the walls
Your face in these pictures looks like a poem
Your eyes lit up like a river stone
Your body so much like a blanket thrown
On a warm bed at night, like a house in a storm
Then you walk right through the doorway
You tell me you're here to stay
The worst is gone and by God I love
If you'd been here this way
I surprise myself sometimes
The way the days unfold and this road unwinds
You tell me you see it too
And the miles seem like inches when I think of you
Its been 25 day since I've been gone
25 weeks since I've seen my home
I spent 25 months chasing this song
And all of this time I've been alone
Then you walk right through the doorway
You tell me your here to stay
The worst is gone and by God I love
If you'd been here this way
And you knew it all along
I wasn't happy all along
And your body all I wanted
Let me to just come home
Then you walk right through the doorway
You tell me you're here to stay
The worst is gone and by God I love
If you'd been here this way
And I only just learned how to stand like a man
I've got 25 years of running instead
How could I see the ground at my feet
The truth is to me that I was caught in the storm
That I wasn't alone
FAQ & Knowledge Song “The Storm”
ℚ. What have the artists said about the song?
On the Such Hot Blood (Commentary) album on Spotify, Jollett states that around the time he was writing the song, he was
going through some really, really heavy stuff and the idea of the song is somebody witnessing your struggles. You go through these kind of private struggles in your life and in some cases you feel like you just, you’ve barely been getting through for a very long time…and somebody comes in and just sees it and is like, “oh my god.” That moment of sympathy and empathy and that sense that somebody can witness who you are and want to help you in your life when your just kind of laid bare, it was really powerful for me at the time.
He later goes on to mention that it’s not just about that moment of sharing your struggle, but also about how
There’s a sense of home that’s kind of the heart of love… that you can just kind of be yourself with someone, they can see your struggles, and they can see what’s good and bad about you and love you for it.
On the website’s “White Noise” section, he talked about the process with creating the song and album:
The whole approach of this record (unlike the first two, and very unlike the upcoming record) was to just play songs in a room — with all natural sounds, no keyboards, no added production — just the five of us and our instruments, our voices. This song, like all the songs on this record, was recorded completely live. Even the vocals were only slightly overdubbed. We played the song five times and chose the one we liked and that’s it. It’s about being seen for the first time, about how you survive things in your life and you bury the events inside you and at some future date somebody unearths them, almost like a witness to the pain you suffered as if to say: my god how long have you been alone with this?
