I am a massive Toto fan and of course a huge fan of Steve Lukather. Might as well get that out of the way. When I heard that “Bridges” was a bridge between a Toto album and a Lukather album, I was definitely excited. Toto has no plans to release another album, though all three current members worked on “Bridges.” David Paich and Joseph Williams co wrote a few songs on here and guest as well. And the album is definitely more like latter day Toto than Luke’s more recent albums. Though he is a huge part of the Toto sound, so it’s hard to separate the man from the band and vice versa.
“Far From Over” is a great kick ass opener. Great chorus. It makes a great point lyrically that Luke isn’t giving up even if he is getting older. The next track “Not My Kind of People” has a good mix of heavy and slightly funky, you know…like Toto can be. “You’re not my meal, just a snack.” The song is a great fuck off style tune and I can relate to it. “Someone” was the second single released from “Bridges” and would not sound out of place on “Mindfields,” an album which is a personal favorite. The ballad “All Forevers Must End” proves that Luke can still write an awesome atmospheric song. This one has the Tambu vibe to it. A great song.
“When I See You Again” actually reminds me a bit of It Bites for some reason. Granted that band definitely was influenced by bands like Toto. An upbeat killer track that just gets better each time that I hear it. “Take My Love” is a slow blues tune that perhaps seems more like a straight Luke song versus a Toto song. Not to say they didn’t have that style. I guess this points out how intertwined he is to Toto’s music. “Burning Bridges” reminds me a lot of “Don’t Chain My Heart” from “Kingdom of Desire.” I suppose some might say it’s a bad thing but I don’t think paying homage to yourself is a problem. The last track is “I’ll Never Know” which is a slower tune which is solid but I don’t think it makes a good closer. I guess I was hoping for a more proggy closer in the vein of “Better World” or “Great Expectations.”
“Bridges” is the album Toto fans have been waiting for. If you sprinkled in some more vocals by Williams and Paich, you would have to call it Toto. “Bridges” is the next best thing however. Toto’s legacy is intact and on full display on “Bridges.” Steve Lukather is still a force to be reckoned with.
