Saturn Interview with Hip-Hop Creative Ethos The Rapper

Rap Olympus Media recently had the opportunity to interview Ethos The Rapper, a talented artist with an extensive musical background. During our conversation, we delved into his creative process, latest project, and plans for the future. Here is how it went down!

How would you categorize yourself? (artist, rapper, singer, writer, producer, videographer, etc.)

If I had to truly describe myself it would really be all the above, but the term that would fit me best would be producer. I’ve been playing instruments for the better part of 22 years now. I have a knack for seeing things others may overlook. I can write in any media, but seeing a vision and improving it is what defines me.

What/who inspired you to start creating?

Learning to play the guitar helped initiate what creativity was already dormant, but hearing Kendrick, Logic, and J. Cole do their thing started it all for me in hip-hop. It made me realize that the love of hip-hop was still there in the mainstream and pushed me to pursue it myself.

What separates you from other artists?

I’d say it’s my identity. It controls everything I do from the way I approach problem-solving to more obvious things like how I run my social media, and that manifests itself the most through my music. One of the most common things people say about my music after listening for the first time is that it’s more or less very unique. To me, that’s important because having an identity can’t be faked. I have to just go out there and be genuine.

How would you describe your sound?

Doubling up on the last answer, I would say that it’s so unique that it’s hard to define. I could narrow it down to genres and say it’s acid rap or trip-hop, or even hip-pop, but my favorite way to describe it is nostalgic. I feel I do a good job of tapping into the vibe – and the rarity – that music had in the nineties. If you consider my instrument background and that I grew up on both hip-hop and alternative rock, it really helps push my sound into an area that is hard to narrow down into words.

Where do you see your career in the next couple of years?

That really depends. I would hope I’d be on the radio as a household name, but it’s hard to say where our lives will take us. I will always rap and make music, but at this point, my music is taking the scenic route and working its way through the algorithms little by little. Depending on how long that takes, I’ll either be well-known in a couple years or right where I am now still. It’s in the universe’s hands at this point.

Are there any other artists you would like to work with in the future?

I’m pretty selective about this because I feel most artists prefer a message of negativity; even the ones who have a message of positivity. I also want people who fit the track and the unique sound makes it a little more complicated. Some artists on my list are Dizzy Wright, Logic, LeRoyce, and Tyler The Creator (especially because he writes to all of his own beats like I do).

Tell us a bit about your most recent project.

My most recent release is called “Saturn.” It’s the seventh planet in a series of releases, focusing on each planet’s mythological and astrological backgrounds. Those planet’s astrological meanings mostly coincide with my career as well, with “Pluto” being the first as it signifies my death and rebirth into this new hip-hop version of me. “Saturn” just hit stores on April 26th and features some of my strongest tracks to date as well as some of my most unique beats. I’m currently 12 songs into my next album, “Uranus,” so that should be hitting stores right around when the NFL preseason starts in August.

Anything else you would like to share with us?

I share avidly on my social media, especially through my Instagram feed and stories, and that plays a part in understanding my brand as a whole. I also have a YouTube channel with playlists of trippy rap and hip-hop and playlists that feature videos covering stuff from cool science to more late-night topics like conspiracies; all of these which go along with the message of my music in some way or the other!
