Rock Music News: An Exploration of Isolation and New Beginnings in Swedish Post-Punk Artist Viola Travels Bloodline EP (2024)

Hailing originally from the vibrant and diverse post-punk, alternative rock, and indie-pop scene, of Stockholm, Camilla Karlsson (It’s For Us), unveils her new solo venture, Viola Travels. Now dwelling in a quaint Ludvika, Dalarna village, Karlsson is set to release her debut solo EP, Bloodline. This marks an exciting new phase in her musical journey, intimately highlighting her multifaceted talents as a songwriter, musician, and artist.

The EP’s premier single, “Blonde Redhead,” deftly articulates the unsettling feeling of being mired in monotony. It explores the fear that emerges from such stagnancy, and the intense desire to discover the spark that could reignite momentum and change.

Next is “Blue-Eyed Boy,” a captivating anthem adorned with arpeggiated notes, showcasing Karlsson’s potent vocals that commandingly navigate the song’s hook. It echoes shades of The Breeders, Throwing Muses, and Liz Phair. Yet, it subtly tones down the riot-grrl vibe, amplifying the intensity of the 80s power ballad through the poignant catharsis of its finale.

“Fun,” the second single, is an intimate reflection on Camilla’s experiences during her maternity leave after welcoming her first child. The song was crafted during a challenging period in her life – relocating to a new city where she had no acquaintances amid the prevailing pandemic. ‘Fun’ expresses her feelings of solitude, isolation, and disorientation, probing the bewildering question, “How the hell did this happen?”

The record culminates with the contemplative track “LA Baby,” reminiscent of the intense and emotive style characteristic of Sinéad O’Connor’s ‘Lion and the Cobra’ era. The chorus provides a haunting display, with a mesmerizing exchange of melancholic vocals that truly shimmer.
