Brightons Brit-Rap Posse on the Rise

In the rural area of southeastern England, a new movement is brewing based on the foundations embedded in the modern day underground scene.

A group of two producers, one rapper and one photographer, OGB (or Oven Glove Boys) are bound together through their mutual passion for music, and strive to climb through the musical ranks. Don’t let the name fool you, as these fresh minds have the talent to back up any insults; as does their latest single, “Operation Mindfuck”.

Influenced by the likes of Big L, Earl Sweatshirt and Westside Gunn, the movement’s front runner, Guerilla Kerby, quickly levelled up his lyrical efforts by studying the greats and allowing his flow to surpass the genre’s concrete sound. Whether it’s through his Brighton-based background or skateboarding lifestyle, Kerby draws inspiration from his everyday life and applies it towards the lyrics, adding the comfort of relatability to the music.

Though a minimalist, he’s made it his mission to continuing diving into the “creative abyss”, stating: “I feel my music has been about rhymes and concept more than my flow and sound.”

Behind the boards is STEREO, the producing member of the crew. Recruited by Kerby through their days of delinquency, STEREO continues to push the envelope as far as his beats go, leading into a softer tone with distinct loops on their “Operation Mindfuck” single. Though he’s still moulding what could be seen as his signature style, STEREO draws from a variety of musical directions whether it be Miles Davis, Cypress Hill or Radiohead.

At first glace, the group seems like a group of youngsters naively creating music, there’s a bigger picture to the goals of the movement; attempting the shift the closed-minded assumptions towards UK rap. “It was always based on showing that the UK can produce equally skilled artists as the US underground,” Kerby declares.

The movement aims to continue building with a wide array of talent of all forms, but there is no doubt that the OGB crew is brewing gradually beneath the UK pavements.
