Good music never expires. That goes for Statik Selektah’s “The Balancing Act” just as well. In his ninth studio album, Statik Selektah reminds us why he is revered as one of the best beat makers and mixtape deejay. The album features some of the biggest names in Hip Hop. Originators like Nas, Method Man, Jadakiss, Styles P, Joey Bada$$, Black Thought, Bun B, Paul Wall, 2 Chainz, Dave East, Killer Mike, Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine, Evidence, Blu, Lil Fame, Marlon Craft, Smoke DZA, Termanology, Rome Streetz, Havoc, the late-great Sean Price, the 2020 XXL Freshmen Jack Harlow and many more.
The album cover artwork is just as stunning as the album. It breathes imagery to the title “The Balancing Act.” Served as an ode to fatherhood, Statik uses his melodies and the voices of some of our favorite artists to illustrate the pressures of balancing fatherhood and a thriving Rap. A businessman with grown-man problems. The call for grown man Music on Soul Custody is something every 30-something is looking for in today’s music. As the tide changes and millennial’s age, could we be seeing the exit of swag rap?
The Balancing Act is packed with features from some of the most notable and even legendary rap artists. Appearances from legends like Nas, Jadakiss, and Method Man coupled with the mix of cross-generation artists is interesting. The variety of rap talent on this album spans styles, eras, and flows. Statik’s ability to seamlessly put the right artist on the right track, with the right production and mastery shows his pedigree as a producer. Unlike other super-producers who stick with one signature style. Statik has mastered the art of experimenting with different sounds. Furthermore, if you want a producer that’s not dancing in all your videos… check out Statik. We joke… but it’s true, he is one of the most humble and hungry music producers in the industry.

Production and bar-wise, “Off My Mind,” is a standout track. The melodic drum beats and the soulful sound mixed with the R&B vocals meet somewhere between nostalgic and futuristic. Rome Streetz delivers, Fly Anakin and Haile Supreme all deliver. Statik perfectly builds the beat alongside each verse. The same can be said about “Keep It Moving,” the opening track with rap-legend Nas.
Statik is something like a vet in the music biz. Without his ear to the pulse of how music, production, and how the business overall works may not be privy to this makes talent, and reach but it’s expansive. Dating back to his first projects, SPELL MY NAME RIGHT, Statik worked with the likes of Doug E. Fresh, Jadakiss, and Q-Tip, making him something like an underground legend in his own right. Since then, Statik has been a part of countless music and marketing campaigns, including projects with Reebok, Diddy, and other notable figures in the culture. He’s even seen top Billboard spots with his due production skills.
The Balancing Act is accompanied by an instrumental version as well. Releasing both speak to Statik’s love for his artistry and respect for the craft overall. Check out Statik Selekta’s The Balancing Act on all streaming platforms. It’s a cliche, but this album has a track for any GROWN rap fan. While I’d argue that the music is family-friendly, this is not your kiddie, swag rap. For the Big Noise readers who are skilled with the pen, check out the instrumental here and see what damage you can do. Peace from the Big Noise crew!
