Quote from the song “To Be a Young Man” by Nadine Shah

I was once a virtuous man
Now stealing's all I've got
I was once a handsome brute
Had models had the lot
My entourage was huge
And everywhere we'd go
Silly ones would follow
Cause we were in the know

[Verse 1]

I was once a virtuous man
Now stealing's all I've got
I was once a handsome brute
Had models had the lot
My entourage was huge
And everywhere we'd go
Silly ones would follow
Cause we were in the know

[Chorus 1]

Oh to be a young man again
Oh to be a young man again

[Verse 2]

We never spoke of aspirations
Instead we made and worked and did
But there were hopes and dreams
That we locked up and hid
Now we're stuck in nine to fives
A monotonous routine
And any hope we had
Seems distant and obscene

[Chorus 2]

Oh to be a young man again
Oh to be a young man again
You don't know what I would give
To be a young man
A young man again
Oh to be a young man again

FAQ & Knowledge Song “To Be a Young Man”

  • ℚ. What have the artists said about the song?

In a press release, Shah stated:

I wrote this after chatting to a guy in a pub. The pub where I wrote most of the songs on this album. He was probably in his late 60s, I never got his name. We were both sat by ourselves at the bar and just started speaking. I remember he said during our conversation “sometimes I forget that I’m not a young man, then I catch my reflection”. I can’t emphasise enough that he was NOT a dirty old man chatting up a young girl. He just told me stories of his glory days, the freedom he felt in youth. After many an anecdote he paused, looked back at me and said “oh, to be a young man again!”
